The Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that it is actively collaborating with international partners to address the escalating issue of air pollution across the archipelago.

The statement follows a recent increase in dangerously high levels of air pollution throughout the Maldives, prompting the Health Protection Agency (HPA) to advise residents to wear masks.

Government Prioritises Air Quality

In a communiqué issued by the Ministry, it was affirmed that the government attributes significant importance to the challenges posed by air pollution within the Maldives. The Ministry highlighted that the prevailing smog conditions affecting the nation are part of a broader environmental concern impacting the entire South Asian region.

The Ministry cautioned that air pollution in the Maldivian region has the potential to exert adverse effects on public well-being, the national economy, and health sectors.

Collaborative Efforts for Long-Term Solutions

To mitigate these impacts and foster a sustainable resolution, the Ministry detailed the government’s comprehensive engagement with foreign nations and regional and international bodies. “The government is undertaking extensive efforts at bilateral, regional, and international levels to improve air quality in the Maldives and find a permanent solution to this issue,” the statement elaborated. “These efforts include conducting scientific studies, exchanging information, and working with regional countries to find a permanent solution.”

Reiterating its commitment, the Ministry further stated that as a small island nation, the Maldivian government consistently prioritises environmental protection and sustainable development.
