Maldives Parliament Launches Online Petition Portal to Enhance Public Participation

The People’s Majlis, the Parliament of the Maldives, has officially launched a dedicated online portal for citizens to submit petitions, marking a significant step towards digitalising parliamentary operations and strengthening public participation within the nation’s democratic framework. The portal was inaugurated at a special ceremony held at the Parliament.

Key Features and Accessibility

The People’s Majlis stated that the new online platform is designed to facilitate the submission of petitions by individuals and provide up-to-date information on the progress of their submitted petitions within the parliamentary process. A key feature of the portal is its integration with the ‘e-Pass’ system, which will be used for verifying signatures and the authenticity of signatories.

According to the Parliament, this initiative is expected to reduce citizens’ reliance on Members of Parliament (MPs) for the petition submission process. It will also ensure that any citizen, regardless of their geographical location across the Maldives, can easily submit a petition.

Regional Significance and Collaborative Development

With the establishment of this electronic petition system, the Maldives has joined a select group of countries in South Asia and Southeast Asia that have implemented such a system within their legislatures. The Parliament noted that, within this region, only Pakistan and Thailand currently possess similar electronic petition mechanisms.

The development and design of the portal were a collaborative effort between the People’s Majlis and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Maldives. Financial assistance for the project was provided by the governments of the United Kingdom and Australia.
