MALE’ – Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed announced today that the introduction of PayPal services in the Maldives is currently in its testing phase.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, Minister Saeed stated that efforts to bring PayPal to the Maldives are progressing rapidly, with the service expected to launch soon.

Presidential Pledge Progressing

The initiative to introduce PayPal services to the Maldives aligns with a key presidential pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The government had previously announced in October that Ooredoo Maldives was designated as a ‘Fentique’ partner to collaborate with PayPal on establishing the service.

Minister Saeed affirmed that the government is committed to fulfilling this pledge. He clarified that a specific timeline for the launch could not be provided due to ongoing testing, stating, “It is difficult to provide a direct timeline for the launch of the service because testing phases are ongoing.”

Addressing Current Service Limitations

PayPal is widely recognised as a trusted global online payment platform that regularly updates its services. Currently, PayPal functionality for users in the Maldives is limited to sending money, which has created obstacles for online business transactions and the receipt of income from various internet-based work.

The full implementation of PayPal services is anticipated to mitigate these limitations, thereby enhancing opportunities for individuals and businesses in the Maldives to participate more broadly in the global digital economy.
