Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended congratulations to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) following its victory in the 13th parliamentary election in Bangladesh. The BNP secured a two-thirds majority in the recent polls.
Election Context
The election follows a period of political unrest in Bangladesh, which saw the government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina overthrown in August amidst widespread protests.
President Muizzu’s Statement
In a post on the social media platform X, President Muizzu acknowledged the BNP’s electoral success and specifically congratulated the party’s leader, Tarique Rahman. He expressed his anticipation for close collaboration to further enhance and strengthen the long-standing friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and Bangladesh. President Muizzu also conveyed his full confidence that bilateral relations between the two nations would expand and solidify in the coming years.
Anticipated Leadership
Following the BNP’s electoral success, Tarique Rahman is widely anticipated to assume the role of Bangladesh’s next Prime Minister. Mr Rahman is the son of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
