MALDIVES INSIGHT
Malé, Maldives – The Maldives Police Service has forwarded the cases of Kendhoo constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Mauroof Zakir and two other individuals to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) for prosecution. The charges stem from their alleged involvement in a protest held in Malé on the night of October 3, 2025.
The other individuals whose cases have been sent for prosecution are Fathimath Zahiyya, a member of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Council, and Abdussalam from Maafolheyvila, N. Holhudhoo.
Allegations
Police allege that the individuals violated the Freedom of Assembly Act by participating in protests across various locations in Malé. They are further accused of obstructing public transportation and commercial activities, impeding police duties, and disobeying lawful orders.
Investigation and Submissions
According to documents sent to the accused, the Maldives Police Service concluded the investigation into the matter and submitted the cases to the PGO last Thursday.
Arrest History
All three individuals whose cases have been forwarded for prosecution were arrested during the protest on October 3, 2025. MP Mauroof Zakir was also subsequently arrested during a separate demonstration organised by bigeye tuna fishermen.
