A man has been sentenced to imprisonment by the Maldives Criminal Court for detaining and assaulting a child in the Tsunami Building area of Malé. Ibrahim Nail, from V. Rakheedhoo / Villa Dee Light, was convicted of the offences which occurred in September of last year.

Charges and Sentencing

Mr Nail was found guilty on two counts: unlawfully detaining the child against their will, preventing their escape from an empty plot of land near the Tsunami Building, and physically assaulting the child. For the charge of unlawful detention, he was sentenced to six months and one day in prison. An additional sentence of one month and six days was handed down for the assault, which involved striking the child on the back and other parts of the body, causing injuries.

Co-defendant’s Case

In connection with the same incident, Mohamed Ayaaz, from R. Dhuvafaaru / Finirelohi, also faces charges. However, the Criminal Court has ordered that his case be reviewed by a different judge, and his trial remains ongoing.
