MALÉ, Maldives – A petition has been formally submitted to the People’s Majlis, the Maldivian Parliament, advocating for the implementation of stringent measures against individuals observed wearing bikinis in public areas on local islands.

Religious scholar Zamzam Farish lodged the petition, articulating concerns prevalent among citizens regarding the presence of foreigners and guests in swimwear, such as bikinis, within public spaces on residential islands. The petition states that this practice is widely perceived to be undermining Islamic ethics and the cultural traditions inherited from Maldivian ancestors.

Furthermore, the petition asserts that a significant number of citizens believe this issue adversely affects Maldivian children and poses considerable impediments to their upbringing in accordance with Islamic principles. It calls for a resolution to the matter, citing the potential negative impact on the younger generation.

Calls for Legislative Action and Enhanced Enforcement

To address these concerns, Mr. Farish’s petition requests that the Majlis reinforce the enforcement of existing regulations. It also urges the enactment of additional legislation to delineate the appropriate course of action for individuals who contravene these rules and to establish a framework for imposing strict legal penalties against them.

Presidential Acknowledgment of Issue

The matter of bikini use in public areas has previously garnered attention at a high level. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu addressed this concern during an event in Ukulhas, Alif Alif Atoll, in August of the preceding year, acknowledging the public discourse surrounding the issue.
