Hulhumalé to Host Maldives’ Largest Mosque, Groundbreaking Set for September

MALÉ, Maldives – The Maldives is set to construct its largest mosque in Hulhumalé, with the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for 13th September. This date coincides with the 900th anniversary of the Maldives’ conversion to Islam.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu initially announced the vision for a “Grand Mosque” in Hulhumalé and the commencement of its practical work during his presidential address to the Parliament. Further details regarding the project were subsequently provided by the Islamic Minister.

Project Details

Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed confirmed the foundation stone laying date as 13th September. He outlined that the mosque complex would encompass various facilities, including Waqf (religious endowment) buildings, a commercial building, and parking areas. Revenue generated from the Waqf structures is designated to support Islamic affairs across the Maldives.

Additionally, the complex is planned to feature a Quran museum and other pertinent facilities.

Funding and Capacity

The project is being funded by an unnamed foreign benefactor, who is covering the costs for all phases, including design and construction. Representatives from the funding party are expected to attend the groundbreaking ceremony.

Upon completion, the mosque is estimated to accommodate approximately 10,000 worshippers, establishing it as the largest mosque in the country. The final capacity figure is subject to confirmation once the detailed design is complete.

The mosque will be located between Hulhumalé Phase 1 and Phase 2.

Design and Development

The concept design for the mosque has been finalised. Detailed design work is currently underway, being carried out by international experts. Minister Shaheem described the initiative as “a very important Islamic project for the future of the Maldives.”
