The Maldivian government has urged its citizens residing in or travelling to countries in the Middle East to exercise heightened vigilance following a recent escalation of attacks between Iran, Israel, and the United States, and subsequent retaliatory strikes by Iran on Gulf nations.

The appeal comes after reported attacks by Israel and the United States on Iran, which have prompted Iran to launch retaliatory strikes targeting US military installations across various Middle Eastern countries. Nations identified as hosting such bases include Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan.

Foreign Ministry’s Directives

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maldivians currently in areas experiencing these attacks were specifically advised to minimise outdoor movements and strictly adhere to the directives issued by the respective host governments.

The Ministry confirmed that it, along with Maldivian embassies situated throughout the Middle East, is actively monitoring the welfare and situation of Maldivian nationals in the region.

To facilitate the provision of consular assistance if required, the Ministry has further requested all Maldivian citizens in the affected region to register with their nearest Maldivian embassy as a matter of urgency.

Travel Disruptions

The ongoing exchange of hostilities in the Middle East has also led to significant disruptions in air travel. Numerous major international airlines have cancelled flights to and from the region, with many flights from the Maldives destined for the Middle East also experiencing cancellations.
