Maldives Gas, the country’s leading gas supply company, has officially introduced locally produced liquid nitrogen to the Maldivian market — a development hailed as a major milestone for both the healthcare and food industries.
Liquid nitrogen is widely used across medical and food sectors for a variety of applications. According to Maldives Gas, the company is already supplying liquid nitrogen to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), the country’s largest hospital, and has begun extending the service to several resorts across the Maldives.
In the medical field, liquid nitrogen is primarily used for cryotherapy — the treatment of skin conditions — as well as for preserving biological samples. This includes samples collected for laboratory analysis and those that need to be transported abroad in frozen condition. With skin clinics now operating across the Maldives, the introduction of locally available liquid nitrogen is expected to be particularly welcomed by such facilities.
In the food and beverage industry, liquid nitrogen is used to instantly freeze desserts, and has become increasingly popular in fine dining restaurants. It is also used to create dramatic, smoke-like visual effects when serving chilled beverages, as well as for flash-freezing perishable food items — helping preserve freshness, flavor, and nutritional value.
