The Maldives has officially joined several Middle Eastern nations in co-sponsoring a significant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution aimed at ensuring maritime security and freedom of navigation within the Strait of Hormuz.

The resolution, introduced by a coalition including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan, seeks to safeguard international trade routes and global supply chains by preventing interference with maritime passage in this critical waterway.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Maldives’ endorsement of the resolution includes specific reservations to protect its national interests and maritime jurisdiction. The Ministry emphasized that this decision does not compromise the sovereign rights of the Maldives or the special protections afforded to island nations under international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The Ministry further stated that the Maldives remains dedicated to international efforts aimed at preventing the escalation of tensions in the Gulf region, thereby ensuring the stability of the global economy and essential shipping lanes.
