Malé, Maldives – The reclamation of Giraavaru lagoon has commenced with the deployment of two dredgers, an initiative aimed at addressing the housing shortage in the Malé region. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu confirmed the development via a post on the social media platform X.
The broader reclamation efforts for Giraavaru lagoon began towards the end of the previous month. The project is being carried out by Boskalis. To date, 56 hectares of land have been reclaimed from the lagoon. The current phase of the project is projected to reclaim an additional 169 hectares.
On 22nd of the previous month, the government publicly released a revised land use plan for Giraavaru lagoon. Following these amendments, the government has decided to conduct a fresh lottery draw for individuals who were previously allocated plots within the lagoon.
A total of 4,072 plots, categorised into four different sizes, are designated for distribution from Giraavaru lagoon. The breakdown of these allocations is as follows:

- 1,250 sq ft: 2,603 plots
- 1,650 sq ft: 1,214 plots
- 2,050 sq ft: 254 plots
- 2,450 sq ft: 1 plot
Concurrently with the Giraavaru lagoon project, the government is also undertaking reclamation work at Fushi Dhiggaru lagoon for the development of Rasmalé.
