The Minister of Health, Family and Social Development, Geela Ali, recently met with the Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives, H.E. Ishigami Rumiko, to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation in the health and social sectors. According to the Japanese Embassy, the discussions covered a wide range of critical topics, including healthy aging, elderly care, and the strengthening of primary healthcare services. Both parties emphasized the importance of developing a robust health workforce to sustain the Maldives’ evolving medical needs and improving social welfare systems.

Japan remains a steadfast development partner for the Maldives, consistently providing aid to the nation’s health infrastructure. Notable recent contributions include the donation of a sea ambulance in February 2026 to facilitate emergency medical services across the archipelago. This partnership also extends to the provision of modern medical equipment and human resource development within the healthcare sector.
