Maldives Appoints First Permanent Representative to UNESCAP

Huda Ali Shareef has presented her credentials as the Maldives’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) to Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of UNESCAP, Armida Salsiah Alisjabana.

The credentials ceremony took place today at the UN Conference Center in Bangkok, Thailand, during a special ceremony.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the meeting that followed the ceremony, Ambassador Huda emphasized the Maldivian government’s priority for regional and international engagement. She expressed the government’s interest in strengthening ties with UNESCAP and increasing participation in the organization’s activities.

Ambassador Huda also assured continued collaboration with UNESCAP to achieve the Maldives’ development goals.

The Executive Secretary of UNESCAP welcomed the new Permanent Representative and assured full support for advancing the Maldives’ priorities and achieving sustainable development goals.

UNESCAP is a commission comprising 53 member states from the Asia-Pacific region. Its primary objective is to address regional challenges in achieving sustainable development goals, including providing technical assistance through various programs.

The Maldives became a member of UNESCAP in 1971, and Ambassador Huda is the country’s first Permanent Representative to the organization since joining.

The credentials ceremony was attended by Counsellor Shajna Ibrahim Iqbal and Second Secretary Siyana Shiyam from the Maldives Embassy in Thailand.
