The Ministry of Fisheries has announced substantial cash prizes for the upcoming nationwide reef fishing competition, organized in celebration of World Oceans Day. The initiative aims to promote sustainable fishing practices while engaging the local community in maritime activities.

According to official statements from the Ministry, the team securing first place will be awarded MVR 30,000. The second and third-place winners are set to receive MVR 25,000 and MVR 20,000, respectively. Additionally, a special prize will be presented to the participant who catches the heaviest fish during the tournament.

Registration for the event concluded today, with the Ministry reporting a high level of interest and significant participation from teams across various islands in the Maldives. The competition is expected to showcase the traditional skills of Maldivian fishers on a national stage.

To ensure environmental conservation, the Ministry has established strict regulations for all participants. The capture or use of species protected by law is strictly prohibited. Furthermore, boat crew members are not permitted to engage in fishing activities, as the competition is restricted to registered participants only. Fishing is also forbidden within marine protected areas or any zones restricted under Maldivian law.
