MALÉ, Maldives – Renowned Maldivian chef and Visit Maldives Board Director, Maha Naseer, has publicly shared her personal struggles and the challenging journey behind her professional success for the first time. Speaking on Television Maldives (TVM)’s “Amilla Ibaarathun” programme, Ms Naseer recounted experiences of abuse, bullying, and mental health difficulties that shaped her path.

Early Adversity and Call for Reporting

Ms Naseer revealed that her difficult journey began at a very young age when she experienced sexual harassment from a close family member. Emphasising the need for transparency and action, she urged the community to report such incidents to relevant authorities rather than concealing them within families.

Battling Bullying and Pursuing Education

During her time at Ameeniyya School, Ms Naseer became a victim of bullying, which led to significant psychological distress and eventually forced her to leave the institution. Undeterred, she independently completed her O-Levels before embarking on her career, initially working as a receptionist at Villa Hotels.

Overcoming Marital and Business Challenges

Ms Naseer’s life was further marked by two broken marriages, betrayals by business partners, and experiences of domestic violence. These cumulative hardships led to severe depression, during which she contemplated self-harm. However, she found the strength to overcome these crises, citing her four children as her primary motivation.

“I am a self-made chef today,” Ms Naseer stated proudly. “Every time I fall, getting back up from zero is my success.”

Professional Achievements and Inspiration

Today, Maha Naseer is recognised as the Maldives’ first ‘Master Chef’ title holder and is a certified judge for World Chefs. She attributed her current standing to years of hard work, perseverance, and the unwavering support of her parents.

Concluding her story, Ms Naseer expressed hope that her candid revelations would inspire young people and victims of abuse. She aimed to demonstrate that despite profound difficulties, determination and resilience can lead to success.
