The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Marine Resources has officially opened the application process for islands interested in hosting the national celebrations for Fishermen’s Day 2026.

Observed annually on December 10, Fishermen’s Day is a significant event dedicated to recognizing the vital contributions of the fishing industry to the Maldivian economy. The Ministry has announced that island councils wishing to host the official festivities must submit their applications through the Government E-Letter Management System (GEMS).

The deadline for the submission of interest has been set for 12:00 PM on Sunday, May 31, 2026. The Ministry further noted that any parties requiring additional information regarding the application process or the planned activities can contact the Ministry directly for clarification.

The primary objective of celebrating National Fishermen’s Day is to honor the hard work and dedication of those involved in the maritime sector, which remains a primary pillar of the nation’s economic landscape. The event also seeks to foster greater public appreciation for the industry and encourage local engagement in traditional and modern fishing practices.
