NEW DELHI — India’s electric vehicle (EV) market achieved a historic milestone in July 2026, recording its highest-ever monthly retail sales. Total registrations surged to 3,27,901 units, representing a massive year-on-year growth of more than 66 per cent.
According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), this boom means nearly one in every eight vehicles sold nationwide last month was electric. The shift in consumer preference is being further accelerated by fears that renewed disruptions from the West Asia crisis could drive up oil prices and reignite inflation.
Highlighting this remarkable performance, FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar said, “India has never bought more electric vehicles in a month than it did in July’26 — 3,27,901 units, up over 66% YoY — with nearly one in eight vehicles retailed now electric.”
Expansion was visible across all major vehicle categories. Electric two-wheelers breached the two-lakh unit threshold for the very first time, securing an 11.2 per cent market share in July 2026. This reflects a steady climb from 10.6 per cent in June 2026 and 7.7 per cent in July 2025. Concurrently, electric three-wheelers captured a dominant 65.1 per cent share, rising from 62.7 per cent the previous month and 60.3 per cent in July 2025.
“Every category told the same story in its own way. Two-Wheelers crossed the two-lakh mark for the first time, at a record 11.2% share. Three-Wheelers, at 65.1%, have made electric the default, not the alternative,” Giridhar noted.
Fleet electrification also accelerated in the commercial vehicle segment, which posted a 3.57 per cent market share in July 2026, slightly above the 3.54 per cent recorded in June 2026 and significantly higher than the 1.65 per cent in July 2025. “Commercial Vehicles nearly tripled to a record 3.57% share — fleet electrification has moved from pilots to purchase orders,” Giridhar stated.
Additionally, electric passenger vehicles posted an 83 per cent year-on-year growth. The category maintained a 7.9 per cent market share in July 2026—identical to June 2026, yet well above the 5.1 per cent share seen in July 2025. “And Passenger EVs grew 83% over last year, held back only by supply of in-demand models — which we urge OEMs to resolve before the festive rush,” he added.
Giridhar pointed out that this widespread regional adoption signals a permanent shift in the automotive landscape. “The EV transition has stopped being a forecast. It is now a showroom reality — and Bharat is driving it,” he said. (ANI)
