The Maldives Customs Service has intercepted an Indian national attempting to smuggle narcotics into the Maldives through Velana International Airport (VIA).
According to a statement released by Customs today, the seizure occurred on August 5th during a routine inspection of passengers arriving from India. Officials conducted a thorough search of the passenger’s luggage after observing suspicious items, which led to the discovery of 450 grams of cannabis concealed within the baggage.
While the suspect has been taken into custody, the Maldives Customs Service has not yet disclosed specific identifying details or the identity of the individual involved. This incident follows a significant rise in the number of foreign nationals apprehended for attempting to import illegal substances into the country.
The increasing frequency of such cases recently prompted the Indian government to issue a travel advisory for its citizens, emphasizing the severe legal penalties associated with drug trafficking in the Maldives.
