India’s maritime and nuclear capabilities saw a significant expansion on Friday with the addition of two key vessels to its fleet: the nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) INS Aridaman and the advanced stealth frigate INS Taragiri. The dual induction marks a pivotal step in strengthening the nation’s strategic deterrence and surface combat readiness.

While the commissioning of the INS Aridaman was conducted without a formal press release, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the vessel’s significance on social media. In a brief post, he described the submarine as an embodiment of power rather than a mere name. This vessel becomes the third of its class to join the Navy, allowing India to maintain three operational ballistic missile submarines simultaneously for the first time.

Surpassing its predecessors, the INS Arihant and INS Arighaat, the 7,000-tonne INS Aridaman features a higher capacity for vertical launch systems. It is engineered to deploy long-range nuclear-tipped K-15 and K-4 missiles, the latter of which boasts a strike range of approximately 3,500 kilometers. This enhancement solidifies India’s position among an elite group of nations—including the United States, Russia, and China—that possess a complete nuclear triad, ensuring a credible second-strike capability in line with its no-first-use policy.

India’s underwater fleet expansion continues with a fourth ballistic missile submarine currently in production. Furthermore, the government is prioritizing a nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) initiative, combining domestic construction with a planned lease of a Russian vessel expected by late 2027 to bridge the capability gap until indigenous boats are ready.

In a separate ceremony, the INS Taragiri was officially commissioned as the fourth Nilgiri-class stealth frigate under Project 17A. Designed by the Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, the 6,670-tonne ship is a product of extensive public-private partnership, featuring over 75% domestic components. The frigate utilizes sophisticated stealth technology to minimize its radar profile, making it a formidable asset in contested waters.

Minister Singh praised the Taragiri as a versatile platform capable of diverse missions, ranging from high-intensity naval warfare and anti-piracy efforts to coastal defense and disaster relief. The ship is armed with supersonic BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles, air defense systems, and indigenous anti-submarine weaponry, enabling sustained deployments and rapid response.

Highlighting the economic stakes, Singh noted that 95 percent of India’s trade and the bulk of its energy requirements are met through sea routes, making a robust navy a strategic necessity rather than an option. He emphasized the Navy’s role in protecting global commerce, citing recent escort missions in the Strait of Hormuz. Beyond physical trade, the Minister also stressed the importance of securing undersea data cables and digital infrastructure from modern threats.

Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, recalled the heritage of the Taragiri name, noting that the original 1980s vessel led the Navy’s transition into the digital era. He warned that current geopolitical instability in West Asia proves that maritime disruptions have immediate global consequences, necessitating the continuous modernization of combat, surveillance, and satellite-reliant systems to counter emerging challenges.
