New Delhi, India has confirmed receiving urgent requests for energy supplies from several neighboring countries, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. These pleas come amidst significant disruptions to global oil flows and a burgeoning regional fuel crunch, both exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Randhir Jaiswal, spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), stated on Thursday that Bangladesh has specifically sought diesel supplies from India. He clarified that any decision regarding these energy exports would be contingent upon a thorough assessment of India’s domestic availability and production levels.

“We have received requests from some neighboring countries for energy exports, including diesel, from Bangladesh. Domestic availability and production will be factored in before any decision is taken,” Jaiswal informed media during a briefing, noting Bangladesh’s consistent role as a fuel importer in recent years.

The MEA emphasized that careful consideration would be given to any decision concerning diesel exports to Bangladesh or other neighboring nations, prioritizing India’s own energy security to ensure it remains unaffected. Notably, the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline has been operational since 2017, facilitating cross-border energy cooperation.
