B. MAALHOS – Work has commenced on the establishment of a solar-diesel-battery hybrid system in B. Maalhos. The initiative, confirmed by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, aims to bolster the island’s electricity services and facilitate a transition to environmentally friendly energy sources.

System Components and Progress

The Ministry reported that work on the project is progressing rapidly. The system will comprise a 96 kilowatt-peak (kWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) array and a 716 kilowatt-hour (kWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

Environmental and Economic Benefits

Upon operationalisation, the hybrid system is projected to yield significant environmental and economic benefits. It is expected to save approximately 185,837 litres of diesel annually in electricity generation for Maalhos. This reduction in fossil fuel consumption is anticipated to cut annual carbon emissions by an estimated 455 tonnes.

Alignment with National Energy Targets

The Ministry highlighted the project as a crucial step towards President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader vision. This national objective aims to ensure that 33 per cent of electricity generated in the Maldives by 2028 is sourced from renewable energy.

The government expressed its belief that this project will provide residents of Maalhos with a sustainable and reliable electricity supply. It is also viewed as a major advancement for environmental protection and a contributor to the nation’s economic progress.
