A plot of land has been officially allocated in Hulhumalé for the establishment of the Maldives’ first-ever dedicated post-mortem facility. The Level 2 medical center will be located near the Hulhumalé Cemetery area, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s forensic infrastructure.

Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, Chief Executive Officer of the Male’ Group of Hospitals, confirmed that the land has been secured and architectural designs are nearing completion. The center is being designed to include modern scanning technologies and state-of-the-art medical equipment to support comprehensive forensic examinations.

This facility is expected to bolster the country’s investigative and judicial capabilities. In addition to determining the cause of unexplained deaths, the center will facilitate investigations into custodial injuries, physical and sexual abuse, and provide critical forensic evidence for legal proceedings and insurance claims.

Historically, the Maldives has been forced to send remains abroad for post-mortem examinations. Over the past decade, 23 bodies were sent overseas for such procedures, costing the state approximately MVR 55,000 per case. The establishment of this local facility is projected to eliminate these high costs and expedite the investigative process.
