The Housing Committee of the People’s Majlis has been formally requested to summon the management of Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) regarding significant delays in handing over 4,000 housing units under the ‘Gedhoruverin’ (Homeowners) Scheme in Hulhumalé Phase 2.

The request was initiated by MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudhu) of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), representing the Galolhu North constituency. In a letter addressed to Speaker Abdulla Shahid, MP Kudhu expressed concerns about the prolonged delay in allocating the flats, a project launched during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.

According to MP Kudhu, the government is currently paying MVR 23.4 million monthly from the state budget to service a loan obtained from India for the Aman Uthurus and Aman Villas projects. He noted that from the 744 completed flats and commercial areas, the state could potentially earn MVR 10.8 million in monthly income. Furthermore, FDC reportedly incurs MVR 3.2 million monthly in salaries and operational expenses.

MP Kudhu highlighted that rightful owners have been identified, agreements signed, and allocations completed for these flats. However, an ongoing government review has stalled the handover process, preventing the collection of rent and other dues. He criticized the government for what he described as negligence, suggesting that the delays are causing financial losses to the state as loan repayments continue to be made from public funds.

The letter calls for FDC’s senior officials to appear before the Housing Committee to provide clarifications on the matter.

FDC previously announced in November that 504 flats from four towers of Aman Uthurus and 240 flats from two towers of Aman Villas have been completed and handed over to the government. The construction of the 4,000 flats under the ‘Gedhoruverin’ project, awarded in 2021, is being executed by two Indian firms: Kalpatharu Projects International Limited (KPIL) for the 16 towers of Aman Uthurus, and National Buildings Construction Company (NBCC) for the 16 towers of Aman Villas.
