Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced its commitment to plant one million trees as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s presidential pledge to plant five million trees across the Maldives.

The five million trees program was officially launched on June 5 last year, and various government companies have been joining the initiative to help achieve this environmental goal. HDC signed an agreement today formalizing their commitment to the project.

At a ceremony held in Kudagiri today, HDC Managing Director Mohamed Mauroof Jameel signed the pledge to plant one million trees. To support this ambitious undertaking, HDC has decided to establish a 100,000 square foot nursery in Gan.

According to HDC, trees grown in this nursery will be planted across Hulhumalé, Rasmale, Kudagiri, Thilafushi, and Gulhifalhu—all areas under the corporation’s management.

“With this program, we aim to create a greener environment across all islands under HDC’s management, including Hulhumalé. Our goal is to transform all our islands into pleasant, green environments,” HDC stated in a message shared with media outlets.

This initiative represents a significant contribution to the national environmental restoration effort launched by President Muizzu’s administration.
