Finance Minister Hassan Zareer has been officially appointed as the President of the Local Government Authority (LGA). The authority confirmed the appointment today via social media, extending a formal welcome to the new chairperson.

According to the Decentralization Act, the presidency of the LGA is held by the cabinet minister designated by the President of the Republic to be accountable for the authority’s affairs. While the role was historically filled by the Minister of Local Government, the responsibility was transferred to the Minister of Finance following the dissolution of the Local Government Ministry.

Minister Zareer succeeds Moosa Zameer, who resigned from his position as Finance Minister last Monday. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu appointed Zareer to the finance portfolio on the same day, subsequently leading to his leadership role at the LGA.
