The Government of Maldives has initiated the development of a robust framework to monitor the movement of foreign workers traveling between islands via sea. This initiative is part of the “Maldives 2.0” project, aimed at addressing the challenges posed by illegal migration in the country.

In an interview with state media, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan stated that identifying foreign nationals on various sea vessels across the Maldives currently presents significant logistical challenges. The proposed system will ensure that details of foreigners boarding or departing any vessel or ferry are instantly accessible to relevant authorities.

Minister Ihusaan emphasized that a primary benefit of this system is the enhancement of maritime safety. In the event of a sea-based emergency or accident, the registry will allow authorities to quickly and accurately identify all individuals on board and expedite the search for missing persons.

Further providing updates on the third phase of “Operation Kurangi,” the Minister noted that efforts are underway to locate and deport undocumented individuals by November 17. He also confirmed that opportunities remain open for those seeking to regularize their status in accordance with legal requirements.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming the Maldives into a model nation for the management of foreign labor, adhering to international standards before the conclusion of the current presidential term.
