The Maldives has welcomed its first Chinese cruise liner, the MS Viking Yi Dun, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s tourism sector. The vessel arrived in the archipelago after a scheduled stop in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

According to Maldives Immigration, entry clearances were processed for 732 tourists and 486 crew members upon the ship’s arrival. This marks the first time a cruise ship specifically from the Chinese market has docked in the Maldives, signaling a diversification of arrival methods for the country’s top source market.

The passengers were accorded a warm welcome by Visit Maldives (MMPRC) as they disembarked to explore the capital city, Male’. The visit comes at a time when the Maldives continues to strengthen its position as a preferred destination for Chinese travelers.

Industry analysts note that while geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have slightly impacted arrivals from European and Middle Eastern markets this year, the Chinese market has remained remarkably resilient. China continues to be a leading contributor to the Maldivian tourism economy, with this cruise arrival further cementing those ties.
