The Family Court has revealed that a woman is currently involved in multiple legal cases after marrying three men without registering the marriages in court.

During today’s Parliament Regulation Committee meeting, members raised concerns about individuals traveling abroad to enter into additional marriages without fulfilling their responsibilities toward their children, as well as the growing issue of unregistered marriages conducted outside the court system.

Addressing these concerns, Family Court Legal Officer Ahmed Mausoom informed the committee that serious complications have arisen due to unregistered marriages.

“There is a case of a woman with three husbands. One woman has three husbands. Such things are likely to happen,” Mausoom stated.

Providing further details, Mausoom explained that the woman initially married abroad. When she was unable to register the marriage in the Maldives, she abandoned it without legal proceedings. She then entered into a second marriage overseas and attempted to register it upon her return to the Maldives. However, her first marriage documents were already present at the court. Before a legal decision was made regarding these two marriages, she entered into a third marriage.

“This is a very serious issue. It could even create confusion regarding lineage and lead to many negative consequences. Therefore, this matter needs to be handled with great caution,” Mausoom warned.

He further noted that such cases are becoming increasingly common. According to Mausoom, while Maldivian law requires individuals to obtain permission from the Family Court before marrying abroad, many fail to comply with this requirement.

Authorities are now calling for stricter enforcement of marriage registration laws to prevent similar cases in the future.
