Nutritionist Kiran Kukreja recently sparked a debate on social media by highlighting several items—including citrus fruits, green tea, coffee, and spicy foods—that should allegedly be avoided on an empty stomach. However, medical experts suggest that these warnings may be overstated for the general population.
Dr. Sujit Nair, a Consultant in Medical Gastroenterology at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, stated that for most healthy individuals, consuming apples, coffee, or juice is not inherently harmful. He emphasized that the impact of these foods depends largely on an individual’s unique digestive health and pre-existing medical history.
While caffeine in tea and coffee can stimulate acid production and fruit juices may cause blood sugar spikes due to a lack of fiber, Dr. Nair notes there is no definitive scientific evidence that these items damage the gut of a healthy person. However, those suffering from acid reflux, gastritis, or peptic ulcers may indeed experience worsened symptoms.
Dr. Nair recommends that instead of focusing on strict restrictions, individuals should prioritize a balanced breakfast rich in protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Recommended options include eggs, yogurt, nuts, and sprouts, which help maintain energy levels and support digestive health throughout the day.
