Dr. Ali Haidar Ahmed, the Minister of Higher Education, has resigned from his post today, marking the ninth cabinet departure since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu began a major restructuring of his administration following recent electoral setbacks.

Dr. Haidar, who originally served as the Minister of Housing at the beginning of the current administration, transitioned to the Higher Education portfolio following the merger of the housing and construction ministries. His resignation brings the total number of departing cabinet ministers to nine.

Other high-profile resignations recently accepted include Foreign Minister Dr. Ibrahim Khalil, Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon, Social Minister Dr. Aishath Shiham, Health Minister Abdulla Nazim, Agriculture Minister Dr. Mariyam Mariya, Local Government Minister Adam Shareef, Youth Minister Ibrahim Waheed, and Tourism and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim. Additionally, Ali Arif, a Minister at the President’s Office, stepped down yesterday.

Following the results of the recent council elections, the administration has also initiated a sweeping overhaul of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs). This includes the resignations of Mohamed Rishwan (MD of MPL) and Abdul Mateen (MD of MWSC) at the government’s request, while the heads of MIFCO, AgroNet, and Fenaka have been formally dismissed. In a related move, Hussain Fahmy, formerly of STELCO, has been appointed as the new Managing Director of MWSC.
