The Democrats have achieved their first electoral victory, securing the Madduvaree constituency presidency. This development coincides with former President Mohamed Nasheed, a prominent figure associated with the party, accepting an invitation from former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for political collaboration.

Electoral Success and Political Engagement

The party’s electoral success in the Madduvaree constituency marks a significant milestone for The Democrats. Following this victory, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu extended his congratulations to the party, acknowledging their recent achievement.

In a related political development, former President Mohamed Nasheed has accepted an invitation from former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to foster a collaborative working relationship. This aligns with earlier reports suggesting a potential political alignment between Mr. Nasheed, members of The Democrats, and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Internal Party Affairs and Leadership

Within The Democrats, Firushan has assumed the role of the party’s president following an internal contest that included candidates such as Inthi. The party also provided an extended opportunity for individuals to apply as candidates in constituencies where no applications were initially received for its primary elections. The “Young Democrats” wing of the party observed Youth Day through various activities.

Critiques of Government Policies

The Democrats have publicly articulated several criticisms regarding current government policies and actions. The party intervened in a dispute concerning a parliamentary seat and criticised the dismissal of judges, describing it as an “example of injustice.”

In economic affairs, The Democrats issued a statement asserting that “a bank cannot be run like a government department,” indicating concerns over the government’s approach to financial institutions. The party also called for the resignation of Ihusan. Additionally, both the MDP and The Democrats have collectively expressed apprehension, stating that the government’s foreign policies are “very dangerous.”

On local governance, The Democrats directed criticism towards the Malé City Mayor concerning waste management issues, noting that Malé was becoming a “garbage dump.”

Prominent members of The Democrats have also made statements regarding the political climate. Eva Abdulla commented that “it is not good for any party to get a big majority in the Parliament,” advocating for a balanced legislative body. Similarly, Fayyaz Ismail cautioned that “if the government gets a majority in Parliament, this government will seize freedom of speech,” highlighting concerns about democratic freedoms.

Furthermore, it was reported that Amru is preparing to contest for a seat in the Parliament.
