The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard has initiated a specialized training program to enhance the deep-sea diving capabilities of its personnel, aiming to reach depths of 100 meters. This initiative is designed to bolster the effectiveness of search and rescue operations during maritime emergencies.

Speaking on a state media program, Brigadier General Mohamed Saleem revealed that Coast Guard divers are currently authorized to dive to a maximum depth of 50 meters. However, due to the increasing risks and complexities of rescue missions, the military aims to double this capacity by the end of the year through collaboration with the government and neighboring nations.

Brigadier General Saleem noted that the second phase of this training program is scheduled to commence within the current month. He also emphasized that while Maldivian waters are generally safe for diving, strict adherence to safety protocols remains paramount for all divers.

Further addressing safety concerns, Lieutenant Colonel Ali Niyaz highlighted that dives exceeding 30 meters require specialized equipment and advanced training. He urged diving instructors and vessel captains to exercise caution, particularly during adverse weather conditions, stressing that thorough planning and equipment checks are essential to preventing tragic accidents at sea.
