The weight of school children’s books is a matter of concern for parents as well. Particularly, the books for primary grade children are very heavy. The practice of carrying heavy loads is also causing numerous adverse effects on children’s health.

Dr. Agham Gaurya, a Spine and Endoscopist working at India’s Saifee Hospital, explained that carrying school books in heavy bags is something that can lead to lifelong issues for those children.

Accordingly, the weight of school bags for children aged 3-5 should not exceed 700 grams. Furthermore, the weight of school bags for children aged 6-8 should not exceed 900 grams. Bags for children aged 9-12 should ideally weigh less than 1.2 kilograms. Dr. Agham also stated that school bags for children aged 13-15 should not exceed 2 kilograms.

The recommended weight has been determined by considering the average weight of children in each age group. Accordingly, the weight of the school bag should be less than 15 percent of the child’s body weight. Otherwise, Dr. Agham advised in consultation with health experts that it could lead to spinal imbalances and other musculoskeletal issues.

It is also very important to carry school bags properly on the back. In that regard, the bag’s straps should be 4-6 inches wide. Additionally, the bag’s waist belt should be properly tightened so that the bag sits close to the child’s back. This causes the weight to shift to the hips, preventing strain on the spine and back muscles. Furthermore, while carrying the bag, it is also crucial for teachers to instruct children to keep the bag close to their back.

For the health of children, they should be provided with bags that have padded shoulder straps and a waist belt. This will reduce the pressure and strain on the back.

At a time when the academic year is about to begin, it is very important for teachers to ensure that children’s school bags are light.
