The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that ongoing border clashes in Afghanistan are severely impeding the delivery of essential food aid and health services, significantly exacerbating the country’s already critical hunger and child malnutrition crisis. In a report issued on Thursday, the agency highlighted that Afghanistan currently faces one of the world’s most dire hunger situations.

Rising Malnutrition Among Children

The WFP report specifically noted a widespread increase in nutrition-related illnesses among children across various regions of Afghanistan. This surge in malnutrition endangers the lives of thousands of children, with millions more struggling to secure adequate food supplies for their daily sustenance.

Humanitarian Aid Hindered

The agency further stated that the escalating confrontations along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border are directly hindering humanitarian access and the provision of basic health services. The WFP cautioned that if these conflicts persist, already vulnerable families will be pushed into further destitution, leading to a deterioration of their living conditions.

This warning coincides with ongoing clashes between Afghan Taliban forces and Pakistani military personnel in border provinces such as Paktia and Khost. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) reported that recent border hostilities have led to the displacement of at least 16,370 families in eastern Afghanistan.

Humanitarian organisations have underscored that Afghanistan’s economic collapse, prolonged drought, and chronic aid shortages have left millions dependent on food assistance.
