A mosque constructed in memory of the late Maldivian religious scholar Sheikh Ibrahim Fareed was officially inaugurated in Bangladesh on Monday. The ceremony was attended by Sheikh Fareed’s two sons, Abdullah Fareed and Abdurahman Fareed, who officially opened the facility.

The inauguration event in Bangladesh also saw the participation of senior officials from Al-Manahil Foundation, a partner NGO of Khidhumath Jam’iyyaa, alongside numerous local residents. According to Khidhumath Jam’iyyaa, the newly opened mosque is designed to accommodate over 300 worshippers for congregational prayers.

Plans for a Mosque in the Maldives

In a related development, Khidhumath Jam’iyyaa announced its intention to construct another mosque in the Maldives, also named after Sheikh Fareed. This initiative follows requests received from Maldivian citizens. The proposed mosque is slated for Hulhumalé Phase Three and is planned as a larger facility, capable of accommodating 2,500 worshippers.

Sheikh Ibrahim Fareed was recognised as a dedicated religious scholar for his work in Dawah (preaching Islam). He was noted for his steadfast commitment to disseminating religious knowledge, including during periods when freedom of expression was restricted. His work resulted in multiple imprisonments and instances of unjust treatment. At the time of his passing, Sheikh Fareed was engaged in efforts to introduce and promote halal tourism in the Maldives.
