President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially submitted the nomination of Abdul Azeez Jamal Abu Bakr for the post of Information Commissioner to the People’s Majlis for parliamentary approval.
The nomination follows the upcoming conclusion of the term of current Information Commissioner, Ahmed Ahid Rasheed, which is set to expire on September 6. Following the President’s submission, the nomination has been forwarded to the Parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions for further review and evaluation.
Abdul Azeez Jamal currently serves as a State Minister at the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage. He holds the distinction of being the first individual appointed as Information Commissioner under the Right to Information Act, having served a full five-year term that concluded on July 22, 2019.
In addition to his previous tenure as Information Commissioner, Azeez Jamal has served as a Member of Parliament for the Maavashu constituency. He is also a well-known literary figure, having contributed extensively to the Dhivehi Bahuge Academy and authored several books on the Dhivehi language.
