Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH) has announced plans to introduce modern cataract surgery services, marking a significant advancement in ophthalmic care for the region.

While the hospital currently provides Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS), the facility is set to upgrade its capabilities to include phacoemulsification. This advanced procedure utilizes ultrasound technology to emulsify the eye’s internal lens for removal, offering a more precise and less invasive alternative to traditional manual incision methods.

In an official announcement, AEH opened a tender for the supply and installation of a phacoemulsification system. Interested parties are invited to submit their bids for the medical equipment by August 11, 2026.

This initiative is part of a broader expansion of specialized surgical services at AEH, aimed at enhancing the quality of healthcare and modernizing medical facilities available to residents in the southern atolls.
