The Maldives government has officially signed a $50 million loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to facilitate fuel imports and alleviate budgetary pressures resulting from rising global oil prices.

The agreement was formalized during a special ceremony held at the Ministry of Finance today. Minister of Finance Hassan Zareer signed the agreement on behalf of the government, while the Managing Director and CEO of the State Trading Organization (STO), Shimad Ibrahim, signed the project agreement. Representing the ADB was Dr. Thiam Hee Ng, Regional Head of the Regional Cooperation and Integration Unit.

According to the Finance Ministry, this facility is part of the government’s broader strategy to secure concessional financing from multilateral banks. The ministry emphasized that such concessional facilities are crucial for maintaining the nation’s debt sustainability amid the economic challenges posed by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have driven up energy costs globally.
