The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a comprehensive weather advisory for the Southern and Central atolls, forecasting a significant deterioration in conditions over the next five days.

According to official reports, a cyclonic circulation forming southeast of the Maldives is driving intensified wind speeds across southern regions. Concurrently, a low-pressure trough to the northeast is generating dense cloud cover and heavy rainfall. Meteorological experts indicate that these atmospheric developments likely signal the formal onset of the Southwest Monsoon, locally known as ‘Hulhangu’.

The period from May 9 through May 13 is expected to experience particularly hazardous conditions, including gale-force winds and torrential downpours. In response, authorities and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) have urged seafarers to exercise extreme caution and strictly adhere to maritime safety protocols. Travelers are strongly advised to postpone non-essential maritime journeys until weather conditions stabilize.
