Former President Mohamed Nasheed has asserted that the People’s Majlis is constitutionally mandated to conduct a vote to remove President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu if such a motion is formally introduced by one-third of the parliament members.

Nasheed made the statement in a post on the social media platform X, responding to recent political tensions. He argued that the ability to hold the executive accountable via a parliamentary vote is a fundamental principle of the Maldivian Constitution. This assertion follows his claims that Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim was dismissed because he was allegedly collaborating with 23 members of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) to initiate a no-confidence motion against the President.

The Speaker of the Parliament and PNC Chairperson, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, recently dismissed Nasheed’s rhetoric, stating that the ruling coalition would not allow any opportunity for a no-confidence vote against President Muizzu. In response, Nasheed reiterated that the procedural requirements of the Majlis must be honored if the legal threshold of signatures is met, regardless of the Speaker’s stance.
